Blonde roast is something you may have seen listed on menus of coffee shops over the last few years.
It’s becoming more popular by the day and some people swear it’s the best kind of roast. But what exactly is blonde roast and is it something you should be rushing to try?
Before we can answer that question, we need to understand what the word roast means in relation to coffee.
Roasting Coffee Beans
During coffee production, green coffee beans are roasted at different temperatures to create the roasted beans we buy as the final product.
Different flavour profiles are created within the coffee beans depending on what temperature they were roasted at and for how long. There are a wide variety of roasts but these are some of the more common types.
Light roast coffee beans are light brown in colour and have a dry surface.
As coffee beans are roasted, they begin to crack. Light roasts generally end their roasting process when they reach the first crack stage.
As far as taste goes, light roast provides very little to no roasted flavour at all. Light roast also has a higher acidity level than longer roasted beans.
Common light roast names include Cinnamon Roast, American Roast, Half City Roast, New England Roast, and Moderate Light Roast.

Medium roast coffee beans are medium brown in colour and also have a dry surface.
The beans are roasted beyond first crack stage and this has an impact on the flavour. Acidity levels are reduced and sugars within the beans caramelise. The origin of the coffee bean remains present in the taste but the roasted flavour is also noticeable.
Common medium roast names include City Roast, City+ Roast, and Full City Roast.

Dark roast coffee beans are dark brown and sometimes close to black in colour. They tend to have a shiny surface due to the levels of oils released from the beans.
The beans are roasted for a longer period than light and medium roasts. This process takes the beans past the second crack stage where they begin to pop and oils are released to the surface.
Dark roast beans have much lower acidity levels and this allows the prominent roasted bittersweet flavours to rise throughout every sip.
Common dark roast names include Fully City+ Roast, Vienna Roast, Italian Roast, and French Roast.

What is Blonde Roast?
So where does blonde roast fit into this scale? Well, that’s a difficult one to answer because different companies describe very different tasting roasts as blonde.
However, a traditional blonde roast would actually fit below even a light roast on the roasting scale. This means that it’s closer to the pre-roasted green beans than medium roast.
In terms of flavour, blonde roast lacks most of the profile that many of us look for in a coffee. There are no roasted, caramelised, or intense aromas to find here.
Instead, you’re left with a very acidic coffee that contains floral and citrus elements. If you’re looking for the origin of a coffee bean to be present within its flavour profile then blonde roast might be right up your street.
Is Blonde Roast Healthy?
Again, this depends on where you’re buying your blonde roast from. The big coffeeshop chains that sell blonde roast are more likely to be selling you coffee beans that match up with a light to medium roast.
An actual blonde roast could be considered less healthy than other roast options because the beans are much more acidic. This may cause some issues for certain people but this is likely to depend on the amount of blonde roast consumed.
Who Should Drink Blonde Roast?
As with most things, variety is the spice of life. A blonde roast provides an experience that’s very different to that of a medium or dark roast.
If you’re fond of floral and citrus flavours then this could be a good option for you. Nevertheless, a lot of what makes coffee so great for many people around the world is simply missing with a blonde roast.
