Whether you prefer your coffee to be hot or cold, there are plenty of options to choose from. One such option is the frappé which is popular worldwide these days, especially in hot weather. But what is a frappé and how is it made?
One of the first things to clear up is that a frappé is not the same thing as a Frappuccino, the trademarked Starbucks coffee.
What Is a Frappé
The original frappé was invented in Greece by a Nescafe employee called Dimitris Vakondios.
In 1957, a Nestlé employee called Giannis Dritsas travelled to the Thessaloniki International Fair to exhibit a new chocolate drink aimed at children.
The drink was made by combining some chocolate powder with milk and mixing it in a shaker.
Dimitris Vakondios was at the Fair and had witnessed the Nestlé employee’s demonstration. During his break, Dimitris wanted to enjoy his usual instant coffee but couldn’t find any hot water. Instead, he imitated the demonstration and mixed coffee with cold water and ice cubes in a shaker.
As such, the original Greek Frappé was accidentally created and it became one of the most popular options on Greek cafe menus.
